"It's 20% skill and 80% attitude"
This is a Riita Iikonen quote from when she visited college. Though I like to think I have more than 20% skill I now understand that if you can justify your work you can get away with pretty much anything. It has made me think about my work more and what I put into it. More thought needs to go into my ideas to get the best result. I want to start getting some humour into my work so maybe I need to look at my attitude towards my work and get more playful with it, at the moment it feels quite serious and work-like.
I also need to be a bit easier on myself. Many illustrators seem to have the mantra of ‘never be happy with what you’re doing’ so that you keep bettering yourself. I like that attitude but I tend to NEVER be happy with anything I do and not want to show anyone. I need to be more confident about my work and not be afraid to say ‘I did this because I wanted to’ or ‘because I like it’. Though I would need to be able to express WHY I liked it.
