"Dont force it"

I was speaking to Jo the other day about my 8 x 8 work. I had drawn the jazzman, used Illustrator for piano keys and manipulated a photo of a saxophone, i wasn't happy with the saxophone and the three elements didn't sit together well at all. They were all toughing, but not interacting - they were obviously on different layers. I feel like i almost HAVE to try new things and use different types of media. The trouble is i can never get them to marry together properly. they always look awkward together. I think this is because i've forced myself into to and it feels fake. Jo told me i needed to do things naturally and not to force things. It should be a gentle inquisitiveness that encourages me to try new things, give it a good go but if it doesn't work i know not to do it in future projects. I need to, as a rule, stick to what i'm good at but allow it to evolve and change as i go on. Most of all it needs to feel natural, otherwise i won't like the final image and will probably resort back to my default way of drawing anyway.
