'Big Illustration Party' podcast Episode 8

Kevin Cross and Joshua Kemble clearly enjoy each others company but keep it relatively professional, which makes their podcasts much easier to listen to than many others. They don't recommend cold calling clients as you could catch them at a bad time or just be plain annoying. The only time you should cold call is if the submission form tells you to call ahead. Like most people they do recommend compiling an emailing list to send out regular but short emails to short you new work. If people don't reply to the initial email take them off the list so as not to annoy them. Attachments are often overlooked or can cause an email to go straight to the junk box. People who have replied are already interested in you, they just need reminding you exist. Holiday images are a great excuse to contact potencial clients, not only do you get to advertise your work but the recipients will also be pleased to hear from you at holiday time. And lastly, you need to keep passionate about what you do. If you begin to get desperate your quality of work could drop and clients will be less likely to want to comission you.
