Cat drawing

I found this image in a book on our shelves called 'The Illustrated Cat - A poster book by Jean-Claude Suares and Seymour Chwast'. The caption reads "These fluffy cats pose proudly, almost disdainfully, regally, as though they had just acquired their thoroughly fancy furs. The chic pale pet below was drawn by Gustav Mutzel, in the late nineteenth century." I wanted to put this on the blog because of the texture. I always struggle getting the balance between fur texture and shading. I tend to put so much emphasis on texture that you can't see the difference in tone. This drawing, however, balances it perfectly. It gives a real sense of the fur being soft and fluffy but not smooth and shapless, it's very natural looking.
