My first portfolio viewing was with the Night Editor of The Star newspaper, Gary Cranmer-Bills.
I learnt a lot about how to layout images, the main subject being my dog/wolf editorial image. If i ever need to layout text i will look at it from a different angle. For example he tries to break the text down into small paragraphs to keep the readers attention. It is believed that headlines should be in a sans serif font for ease of readiing, but that the main body of text sgould be in a serif font as the little flicks and kicks make small font sizes easier to read. Contradictory to that a sans serif font should be used on a dark background so the letters don't blend together.I also learnt that the newspaper has to contain 20% adverts, so if it is a heavy nes day which would outweigh the adverts some news has to be sacrificed.
My fist portfolio viewing might not have been exactly what i expected but it did make me finish my business card design and look at my portfolio with fresh, critical eyes. Some images have a few typing mistakes, some need touching up and i want to reprint all of them to be as large as possible on the page.I have a few more meetings lined up and Gary said he would email me a list of design companies and magazines he thinks would like to see my portfolio.
