This months creative review is as follows:
Exhibition:
Bank Street Arts is a large Georgian building in the centre of Sheffield with lots of tiny or steep steps to trip you up. There are lots of little rooms which means there can be upto five different artists exhibiting at any one time. It has a friendly atmosphere but quite middle class, with people sat around drinking low fat lattes from the cafe. The first rooms had a photography in it but i was there to see an artist called Hassan Torossian. Although it was a relatively small show i would recommend it for anyone intersted in screenprinting, little characters or retro typography. It's got potencial for my own exhibition when i've finished college or instead of D&AD. There are lots of people walking past and the cafe could bring in extra people. Though i think i would want to do some extra advertising to get as many people in as possible. It is £110 for 1 room for 1 week, plus £35 per day if you can't sit and look after your own work, plus a 20% commission on any sales.
Book:
The Boy Grows Up - Richard McCann. Richard McCann was the son of the first woman murdered by The Yorkshire Ripper. The book is a shocking story of how he and his sister went looking for their mum when she didn't come back from work, how the oldest sister was constantly raped by the step father and the obvious psychological effects later in life. It was interesting to read how it messed up his life and how he fought to change it and try to save his sister from alcohol dependence and a violent partner.
Film:
Conan The Barbarian. I thought the adverts said it was a 12 or 15 at most but it was so graphic and violent that i'm sure it was an 18. It's an ok film but not for the faint hearted. There's a classic traumatised child and lifelong revenge story but most of the budget was spent on fight scene choreography and CGI blood.
Article:
Autumn Varoom! pg 54 I found the article about Robbie Porter really interesting. There are a selection of similar articles with different artists but the Robbie Porter one helped me the most. It looks at a commissioned piece of work, going through the whole process from brief to outcome. It was a good insight into what a real life brief might be like, the ideas he came up with and ammendment requests from the client. The other articles were a little vague, whereas this one was more precise and detailed.
