This is 'British Paper Industry' by Chris Burke in 1991. ( chrisburke.org.uk ) It is a metaphor showing a bad clown being pummeled into a corner with a tomato. Like a bad clown the papers have reduced themselves to party tricks and poking fun at others.
The British flag and colour scheme are a valuable clue, with the gentle wintery blue balancing the bold red tomato. I'm always a fan of loose "scruffy" styles, and Burke is no exception. You can almost feel the force of the tomato. On closer inspection you can see lots of light outlines where Burke has changed the angle or size, the best example being the top of the left shoe. My favourite aspect of the image is the composition, an interesting composition can really boost an exciting idea.
I hope some of Burke's ways of working will infiltrate mine. My weakest link is developing a good idea into a good image via a decent composition. It might even encourage me to be a little less controlling when it comes to outlines and 'colouring in'. I can get quite hung up thinking how will i ever cut it out in Photoshop if the edges aren't crisp ans seamless?! Which is why i'm doing more artist type paintings on canvas than smaller editorial pieces where i need to spend hours in Photoshop just to bring it back up to its original quality.
